Don Schmidt's quote on WOWO

Indiana NewsCenter interview Don Schmidt today and WOWO used one of the soundbites. I do not remember the exact words; however, Don Schmidt basically said that two things hurt himself and Councilman Crawford:

1. He said the Kelty did poorly enough where it brought the Republican ticket down.
2. He said the the 900# guerilla in the race was the Libertarian Party.

Don Schmidt told them that he and John Crawford figure they lost due to Libertarians...

I imagine the Republican Party will pay a lot more attention to the Libertarian Party over the next couple of years. The local Libertarian Party has a long ways to go to get a candidate elected; however, I feel that we can do it if we work hard and if we run candidates who are willing to work hard... (Think candidates who work as hard as Karen Goldner worked)

I would also like to add that our candidates did not take votes only from Republicans. We also took votes from Democrats. Libertarians can have appeal to both Republicans and Democrats.

Uhhhhhhh. One candidate received 10% of the vote. You guys didn't do much damage at all.

I agree that the Libertarians hurt Schmidt (ironically electing someone even more contrary to their beliefs). I don't think Libertarians hurt Crawford. I realize that everybody is trying to blame everything BUT the smoking ban for his loss but sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. If you voted for a Libertarian, you were probably unlikely to vote for John "1984" Craword under any circumstances.

I also do NOT think that we overly hurt Crawford...

I disagree. I think if there were no Libertarians than some voters would've chosen Crawford even if they didn't necessarily like him...

The News Sentinel endorsed both me and Crawford. While I would not have voted for him, I can certainly see someone voting for both me and him. We were both shooting for the fiscal conservative vote.

Robert,
You are a fiscal conservative. Crawford is one in name only. Harrison Square support hardly says "fiscal conservative!"

I don't see burgeoning governmental programs as compatible with fiscal conservatism (Crawford, not you Bob).

I certainly agree with the past two comments. But how one campaigns and how one governs are two seperate things. He did try to paint himself as a fiscal conservative, and he failed. Shoaff won big because he was the only major party at large candidate who opposed the project.

Shoaff was the "flagpole" that HS opponents rallied around, while Bender was the flagpole candidate that smoking ban opponents rallied around. Brown and Crawford could be considered flagpoles for pro ban, pro HS voters, but Brown has a slight edge in that she wasn't trying to paint herself as a fiscal conservative and thus had more appeal among liberals.

If you study the numbers there is little doubt that the LP defeated both Schmidt and Crawford. Although it took other issues to place both at risk, you can't discount the close to 10,000 votes the LPs got in the at large race. Schmidt was right that the 580 votes J Bartels got ended his political career. For those who think that the LP votes would have gone to others if the LPs had not been on the ballot; simply look at the City Clerk race. The mayor's race garnered 53,000 votes, yet Sandy running alone only got 40,000 votes. The 13,000 vote shortfall can not totally be linked to 13,000 republicans voting a straight ticket. Some voters wanted everyone out of office and with no one running against Sandy, they simply refused to vote for anyone for clerk. Had the same voters not had the option of voting for the LPs and simply not voted in some council races, both Schmidt and Crawford would have been elected. Both took a hit with HS and the smoking ban, but it was the LPs who drove the stake in their heart. Proving once again - Every Vote Counts

I voted, but I do not remember whether there was a way to vote straight ticket libertarian? was there such a button?

Schmidt has no one to blame but himself. Karen Golder worked her arse off and Schmidt sat back and figured, "ah, I got this one in the bag again."

Schmidt and others with his attitude of entitlement need to show the voters some respect, and be out in the trenches with the rest of the candidates asking for their support...and not just expecting that it will be there.

Since the Repubs failed to file a candidate for City Clerk it would have been interesting to see the number of votes a Libertarian running straight up against a Democrat would have got.

I did not vote for Clerk after reading the large amount of parking dollars that have gone missing.
