A couple days ago I posted a question to those who support Harrison Square.
Why on Earth is a new publicly financed parking garage needed for the Harrison Square Project?

Scott Grieder (A passionate Harrison Square supporter) also expressed an interest in knowing the answer to this question. We have a lot of extra parking downtown and a parking garage would make it far less likely that people would WALK around downtown Fort Wayne.
In the previous post I asked Sam Talarico to let someone else answer the question.
Alas, not one Harrison Square supporter chose to answer the question!
Sam we need your help!
The parking garage makes no sense to me. I think that it would discourage people from walking around Downtown.

I think the answer is obvious- how far are you going to carry your luggage when you check into the hotel?
How silly is this comment! Do you know of any hotel were you do not drive up to the door to drop off your bags! The proper question is how far do you expect the "shoppers", "restaurant patrons", and "ballpark fans" to walk! Assuming of course any actually show up.
If this is going to be such a wonderful hotel, shouldn't the staff fetch the luggage?

I'm a huge supporter of the project, and agree, no parking garage is needed.
Some surface parking should be available nearby, but not a parking garage.
I see the garage as designed primarily for use during the day for hotel guests, convention-goers and Lincoln employees. The Harrison Square footprint is located primarily on current Lincoln employee parking. (I believe we will soon hear more about Lincoln's involvement with Harrison Square, including employee parking agreements.)
The ballpark would do fine without a garage. We all know that there are those in Fort Wayne who will not park unless it is immediately next to their destination. Maybe the garage would also be the main location for handicapped accessible parking.
Why pay to park in a garage when nights and weekends are free at downtown parking meters? Coliseum parking will never be free.
If Harrison Square is approved I plan to walk from blocks away and enjoy the sites and sounds of the area and never park in the garage.
I totally see your point. Screw the parking garage - who needs to build up when we can build out. Lets level the Embassy and create more surface level parking.

I'll point out a couple of reasons.
1. Parking for the condos
2. To give people that are going to be wigged out about being downtown and looking for a parking place a place to go directly.
3. Hotel parking
4. Convention Center parking
5. Parking for the sake of parking
6. Future downtown growth - you often speak about lack of urban planning, but say things REALLY take off, would you rather try to retro fit a parking structure in, or would you rather have the infrastructure already in place to handle a booming downtown.
7. Future phases of HS - take a look at Hardball's future plans, their future development is right on the top of some of Lincoln's surface parking lots.
BUT, I'm not worried about it, i've stuck money where my mouth is and already live downtown, I'm planning on pogosticking to the games. I'm also not too worried about the hotel - I always valet.

The Libertarian solution would have been to not have gone down this road in the first place. This was not a well thought out plan. The best thing to do now is for the city sell off the land that they seized and cut their losses.

I see your point about the parking garage, plus isn't there one across from the Hilton's main entrance? But we need to realize that this will be nice for the hotel and Grand Wayne Center. Out of town visitors I would think, would prefer a parking garage.

And Mike - Have you asked the city to build you a parking garage? Never rule it out until you hear a definitive answer.
considering they are using the Lincoln parking lots for the Stadium, they have to give the Lincoln employees someplace to park would be my guess

I say build the parking garage as tall as possible, limited only by the constraints of civic financial ruin.
With a massive parking garage and a walkway system, Saturday nights would be a lot less stressful for drunks driving on Calhoun Street. I'd hate to guess how many times in my younger days I was all shitfaced, driving north between Lincoln C & H, by the Conservatory, and then...out of the blue....BLAM! Cars lining the street, consuming lanes intended for DRIVING! What the hell? I would always forget about that church on the right...plus some overflow from Embassy events.
Hell yeah. Make that church pay for some spaces in the garage to keep those cars off of Calhoun.
See? Lots of solutions if you dig a little.
So seriously, there's a 24-story or so cap on how high you can build structures in the Fort...that would be enough parking to keep downtown amply supplied for at least 100 years....then the city could simply commandeer all of the surface parking in the downtown area and divvy it up among other out-of-town millionaires.
