I have had several people ask me what I think about Matt Kelty's stance on Sexually Oriented Businesses (SOB's).
I am surprised that anyone who reads this blog would ask me what I think about Matt Kelty's thoughts on SOB's.
I do not agree with them in the slightest.
I tend to think that consenting adults should do what they wish as long as it does not harm someone else.
I do not think that SOB's hurt anyone. While it is possible that SOB's are harmful, I really am not sure whether they do or not. Consenting adults should have the right to do what they wish as long as they are not harming another person!
I have never had someone stick a gun in my face and force me into an SOB against my will. The people who patronize SOB's are adults and they should have the right to make their own decisions.
I truly am tired of the Government constantly trying to legislate everything. You cannot legislate morality, period...
I choose not to patronize SOB's in general. In my navy days the same cannot be said. After spending a couple of months underwater with a hundred other young men I did all kinds of things when I pulled into foreign ports that I would not do today.
If a friend has a Bachelors party and part of the Bachelors Party is in a "Strip Club" then I go to a "strip club." I do not generally go to SOB's; however, I have done it before and I may do it again. That is between me and my wife and is no one else's business.
It is fairly easy to statistically conclude that being overweight is bad for your health. Will we allow the government to make it illegal to be overweight?
It is unhealthy not to exercise three times a week. Should the government pass a law requiring us to exercise?
This is certainly one issue where Matt Kelty and I disagree.

It seems like a lot of people were against the smoking ban, but for this.

I am mostly Libertarian.
AWB does not claim to be a Libertarian. I read his blog a lot. AWB is a small government Republican. He is a dying breed. There are fewer and fewer small government Republicans each year...

No disrespect meant here, Mike, or any other Libertarian, etc... BUT, I have to say there is a need to keep the activities of what we DO AS CONSENTING ADULTS away from children.
Whether this be moving the Zoo signs away from the roads traveling past the strip joints, or taking down the raunchy Deja Vu billboards on the highways, there is a way to have businesses act responsibly towards the community.
NO, we cannot legislate morality. It will not work. BUT, I think anyone who sits and talks with Matt Kelty would understand that isn't in the agenda. How many people have done that? I think a HUGE majority have simply reacted to the media spin on it and the knee jerk reaction towards a politican is speaking out on a subject which has been considered taboo.

When I was a kid, girls were icky. The sillhoette of a woman would have detered me from going inside. About the time I started the 5th grade did I decide that women are nice to look at. If a kid is old enough to know what a gentleman's club is, he is old enought to know that its wrong for him to go inside.
When I was growing up, the Cinema Blue theater was a couple blocks from my house. It had been closed before we moved down there, but every day I'd see the sign that said "World's Finest XXX Movies!" It did not affect me any because I knew what the rules were and that I was not allowed to see those movies. Just as seeing beer in a grocery store will not have any effect on a child that is being brought up responsibly.

Have you gone inside a school lately? On Friday, I caught a 3rd grader on the phone discussing explicit sexual tones via his cell phone. (I was in the room, working with another student!) Found out later his mommy is stripper at a local bar! Oh, not a pretty thing for our local schools! It does not beat the lap dancing kindergarten student, I had a few years ago! Students today! Kids....do grope each other, beginning in 2nd grade!

To All,
I spent several days in Amsterdam a few years ago. While I was there I saw the Red Light district.
One evening I observed a family of four out for a stroll. Mom and dad were walking with two kids between the ages of four and seven.
Right in the middle of the Red Light District!
"That's not right" I thought to myself. Those children shouldn't be exposed to this scenery of prostitution, sex parlors and adult toy stores.
Then I thought about it for a moment and realized I was having an "Americanized knee-jerk reaction" because my culture doesn't normally accept this. However, that doesn't make my culture "right".
I thought about and realized that over here crime is low, violence is minimal, and everyone seems to get along in relative peace and harmony with everyone else. They have been raised around this for decades. Perhaps my way isn't the best? Perhaps we Americans could learn something from these folks?
I still have a problem with what I saw regarding the children, BUT after experiencing their culture firsthand it has made me think that we are WAY TOO HUNG-UP on worrying about what the kids see regarding sex. Perhaps if we worried more about our economy and violent crime and education and many things that are much more important than always worrying about children seeing anything sexual we might be able to solve some real problems in our communities.
Just a thought to ponder...

Kids have to be taught respect for each other and themselves. They instinctively touch everything in reach and need to be taught not to do so.
3rd graders should not have cell phones. Different parents have different attitudes towards profanity. Some don't allow it at all while others tell their kids to not cuss at school. While I think that it is possible for a stripper to raise a child properly so as long as she keeps her professional and personal lives separate, this particular stripper is not a good parent.
I do usderstand that what a child's parents do for a living can be a stigma. After all, my dad is an attorney....

As for the SOB controversy, I have a good teacher friend who always says "You should prepare your child for the world, because you cannot realistically change the world for your child."
I tend to agree with that.
But if SOBs and videos were not so close to elementary schools (Brentwood and Franke Park & Family Video) may be our pre-teen boys would not be able to be so fanscinated on their afternoon walk home, after school.
In other news, I encountered my own first Kindergarten butt grabber. At least he likes girls hind cheeks :)!
I tend to think that you cannot shelter children from the big, bad world and that you shuold instead educate them and teach them to think for themselves...
That being said, I do understand many of the points brought up by those who wish to shelter children...

I, for one, have certainly never believed in sheltering my children. I didn't grow up that way and I don't believe in censorship, either. I believe in reality. However...
What does concern me is the propensity to rampantly infiltrate the sexually oriented materials into our children's lives in the media and business sectors.
This is no different than going to our county fair one year and seeing every third vendor promoting illegal drugs thru merchandise. The county fair board realized the implications of exposure to children, not consenting adults, and stopped it.
Some may take offense at that and say we are sheltering children. Somethings like violence and illegal drug use and prostitution should be away from children until they are old enough to understand the implications and context.
Would those of you who take a different stand than this say it would be all right to let child molesters or pornographers sit in a park on their laptops and surf for porn? Let their dvds play explicity images in the backs of their cars where other people can see them? Or let prostitutes walk the street in YOUR neighborhood? How about letting your friends smoke illegal drugs in front of your children?
Thoughts to ponder.
