Fort Wayne Illegal Immigration Rally draws 5500 people according to The News-Sentinel

It is hard, actually impossible, to believe that approximately 5500 people actually attended a rally in Fort Wayne supporting illegal aliens on Sunday April 2nd, 2006.

Rallies like this ensure that The Republican Party will "Flip-Flop" on illegal immigration and will end up passing an Amnesty program with broad Democratic support...

For quite awhile I have been predicting the Democrats will take at least one House of Congress from The Republicans in 2006. I believe that even more now... The Republican Party will Flip-Flop on this issue and will show themselves to be spine-less wimps. Mark my words...

As far as I am concerned there is only one good thing about this rally, it was peaceful... I fully support everyone's right to peaceful protest...

One of the things that disturbs me most about this rally is that Bishop John D'Arcy was involved with this rally in a visible and active roll. One of my readers pointed out in an earlier post that he did not feel the Roman Catholic Church was one of the forces behind these rallies. I do not agree with that at all, I now even more strongly feel that The Roman Catholic Church was heavily involved in the Fort Wayne rally.

The head of this entire Diocese took an active roll in the rally. The rally gathered at St Patrick's Catholic Church... What more do we need to know?

I still feel that this is the answer to legal immigration:
1. Secure the border. Build a wall if needed. Use The National Guard if needed.
2. Impose sanctions against Mexico if they keep encouraging illegal immigration.
3. Tax all money transfers from the USA to Mexico. Use this to pay for the services these
illegal immigrants use.
4. Throw all actual illegal alien criminals out of this country as soon as their prison terms are up.
5. Throw out all other illegal aliens out of the country. This will take awhile...
6. After all other steps are done INCREASE legal immigration AND make the process easier.

I DO NOT want to reward illegal aliens. There are a lot of people who enter this country the right way and we should not reward those who break our laws.

EVERY illegal alien that works is breaking at least one Federal law and committing a felony. I often hear people say that illegal aliens are not breaking the law.

To work in The United States you need a Social Security number or a Tax ID number. Illegal aliens often work by STEALING another person's Social Security and illegally portraying themselves as that person. THAT IS CLEARLY BREAKING THE LAW...

Period...

Mike, it disturbs you that D'Arcy was involved with this protest. Were you similarly disturbed by Evengelical pastors rallying their flocks to Bush in 2004?

There are MANY things Right-wing evangelical's have done in the recent past that have irritated me John!

Mike,
You and I both agree that current immigration laws are unjust. You and I both agree that anyone using a stolen Social Security number should be punished, because they have caused harm to the person whose identity they have stolen.

However, most illegal use false (not stolen) Social Security numbers. The only entity harmed is the Social Security Administration, an organization that should have never existed in the first place. Is there any real harm done if this institution is the only thing that is affected?

In other words, the laws that these illegal immigrants have violated are unjust.

When Susan B. Anthony voted, she violated an unjust law.

When John Scopes taught evolution, he violated an unjust law.

When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, she violated an unjust law.

Robert:

Are you saying that using a FALSE Social Security Number is NOT a Federal crime? It is a Federal crime and it should be punished...

I overall do not like the Social Security system. That being said; it is the law and so I AM IN FAVOR of punishing those who break its rules.

Whether or not bad laws should be enforced is a dilemma among Libertarians. It is often argued that if a person has no respect for a bad law, they probably do not have any respect for good laws. For this reason, when about five years ago one neighbor told me that the other neighbor was dealing marijuana, I encouraged them to report it to the police.

On the other hand, consistent enforcement of certain laws can lead to trouble. Consider the example of the 6% tax that Indiana places on items perchased from out of state through the mail or over the internet. All Indiana taxpayers are required to report their online and catalog purchases on their IT-40. I estimate that about 10% of Hoosiers do not report their online purchases. What would be the legal ramifications if the state decided to go after all these people for tax evasion? I contend that the state would end up losing more revenue that it would gain by consitently punishing people for evading the 6% use tax. The Indiana Department of Revenue probably pragmatically concluded this and is not pursuing these tax evaders for this reason.

The victim of a crime has the sole descretion to file charges in a case. In the case of illegal immigration and tax evasion alike, it is the government that is the "victim". I am taking off my Libertarian hat and putting on my pragmatic hat. Forget any aurguement that aliens have the same civil rights as the rest of us. The government must make a judgement call and decide if the costs outweigh the benefits of pressing charges against tax evaders and illegal immigrants.

Oh man! Don't me get started on the out-of-state sales tax - what a scam that is. Why the hell should the state of Indiana benefit from sales made in other states? The sales tax is levied to the SELLER not the buyer - the seller usually just passes the cost onto the buyer. If the state where the items are sold do not levy this tax on the seller then why should the state of Indiana tax the buyer? This is totally outrageous and I would have serious reservations about voting for any politician who supports that law...
