Item two was also supposed to be accomplished on the first day of this historic Congress.
"Select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste. fraud, and abuse."
This was a major campaign promise of the Republicans in 1994. They did make a very feeble effort to have an audit performed in 1995. This audit never really materialized. Little of the waste, fraud, and abuse that was found was eliminated.
Waste, fraud, and abuse is rampant in Congress and EVERYONE in Washington DC knows it. We need to elect politicians who will really ELIMINATE waste, fraud and abuse...
So the score is:
Promises Kept 1
Promises Broken 1

The only problem with a comprehensive audit of the U.S. government regarding waste is that it would probably take decades to list all of the ways that our tax dollars are squandered. Years of pork barrell amendments to bills has created a system where the politicians in Washington do not think about the good of the country as a whole, rather they simply look st the bottom line of federal spending in their state or district.
Indiana in 2002 received approximately one dollar in federal spending per dollar sent to Washington. Some may say that this is a good ratio, but I think that we in Indiana could make much wiser decisions on how those dollars should be spent rather than a bureaucrat in Washington.
I agree with you 100%!
This is an interesting idea - since they have now required higher standards for auditing of any organization that recieves federal funds - including higher requirements for the independent auditors performing the audit. It is too bad, they themselves don't have to go though an audit. This seems to confirm that they did indeed break the first promise as well - what laws others have to follow - they don't have to follow!
