Alito could be a failure on abortion

As most of you know I am a small government type and I believe in the power of the fifty states.

After reading many of his opinions it appears unlikely that Alito would vote to overturn Roe v Wade.

That sucks.

Roe v Wade should be overturned at once. Abortion should have NEVER been regulated by The Federal government, the very idea is contrary to our constitution...

Each of the fifty states should decide whether abortion is legal or not themselves. This would most likely make it legal in some states, and illegal in other states, I feel this is 100% what the founding fathers intended. They never wanted The Federal Government to dictate policy to the fifty states on issues like abortion...

I general I am pro choice, that being said, it should be up to the States and I overall think abortion is wrong in many cases; but, not all. I am pro choice because I do NOT think it is the governments job to tell potential mother's what they can do...

Interesting reason for wanting Roe vs. Wade overturned. What do you think about the 2003 decision that overturned sodomy laws in some states?

Personally I think individual rights triumph states rights everytime. I only support the right to an abortion up to the end of the first trimester. Three months is plenty of time to decide whether or not you want to keep it.

I have always been a States Rights person. If I were elected Supreme Dictator I would make the following laws on abortion:

The Federal government would have nothing to do with abortion, no funding, no involvement of ANY kind.

The States would have the authority to pass laws on abortion for their owns states.

I think the ideal State would pass laws like I would want for abortion which would be:

1. Abortion is allowed in any case where the health of the mother is in question.

2. Minors would be REQUIRED to involve their parents in any decision involving abortion.

3. I also think that women should have their abortions performed before the end of the first trimester, I feel that is sufficient time.

Our positions as hypothetical governor are the same but as hypothetical president are different.

What if a state decided to adopt sharia laws during the Sylvester Administration? Would that state have the right to do so?

I'm a little confused about your statements again Mike. You say the federal government should not be involved in the legality of abortion. Okay. Then you say each state should decide.

Then you say:
"I am pro choice because I do NOT think it is the governments job to tell potential mother's what they can do... "

But you just mentioned what state government should do. Isn't that saying that you do think it's government's job, as long as it's the state and not federal government doing so?

The abortion debate really all hinges on one definition: when life begins. Until society can come to some agreement on that, this issue will never go away.

I have read letters to the editor that insist that sperm become a person with rights once it leaves a man's body. To that woman, Pee Wee Herman, George Michaels, and anyone who uses contraceptives is a serial killer. I have also heard of a bioethicist who insists that three year olds should be considered disposible property. To that man, women who leave their babies in Dumpters have done nothing wrong. These are two obvious extreme answers to the same question. I think that when the fetus develops a brain and is capable of feeling pain is a good place to decide that it has rights of its own. Most of the "life begins at conception" crowd are trying to promote a religious agenda, with the obvious exception of the "Libertarians for Life" crowd, which has a handful of agnostics who insist that having 46 chromosones make you a person. I don't know what they make of Down Syndrome patients with 47 chromosones, or chimpanzees who have 48 chromosones and have 98% of our DNA in common.
