The GOP has a dilemma. Senate Republicans can dump Trump and alienate his followers. Or they can keep Trump and alienate all rational adults in this country. A moderate Republican might consider defecting to the Democrats, if they'll take him.
President Biden has that post-9/11-Bush vibe about him right now. Remember how Bush's approval numbers went high for a while and the GOP gained seats in Congress in 2002 and 2004? Voters who hate chaos and terrorism are inclined to support Biden. As long as the GOP keeps Trump, Democrats will use him as a boogeyman. The only way I see Republicans gaining seats in Congress in 2022 is if Biden REALLY screws up. Don't count on that happening, because he's been playing this game longer than most of you.
I think the smart thing to do is for Republican Senators to vote to convict Trump of inciting the Capitol Riot. It's also the right thing to do. That is a painful choice, because MAGAiacs are unpredictable when provoked. They might join the Constitution Party, they might try to start their own party, or they might resort to further violence. The GOP will be fractured as a result, and it will take time to rebuild, if that party can be rebuilt at all.
Join the Libertarian Party. We're the largest, loyal opposition party in the country. We not only support the Constitution, we've actually read it too.
